Portrait or Personal Image - Eric J Swanbeck

The equipment I use at the moment is Nikon. I started with an N60, then moved up to a Nikon F5. When I switched to digital I began with a Nikon D200 and most recently moved up to a Nikon D300S. The function of shooting 7 frames per second has allowed me to capture some amazing shots. The lens I use predominately is the Nikon 70-200 2.8. This lens combined with my camera is great for shooting wildlife and sports. The equipment I use is great for what I do but I miss many great opportunities because I don't have the bigger lens that would get me even closer to my subjects. Creativity and stealth have helped me make up for the fact that I do not have a lens that can photgraph from great distances. I have several blinds I use, depending on the season, that allow me to get close to wildlife that would otherwise run if I got too close.

Action is my passion! The areas I like shooting most are wildlife and sports. I find still shots to be positively boring. I will shoot some stills, but only if I feel the shot is unique. The ability to capture and freeze action with perfect clarity is something I continually try to perfect. Shooting wildlife and sports gives me plenty of opportunity to practice this skill. Hand holding the this camera for still shots is difficult because it picks up the slightest vibration if your hand isn't perfectly steady. However, when panning during my shots the shake has no affect as the movement seems to negate the shake.

The perfect shot! As a photographer my quest is to get the perfect shot. I know there isn't a perfect shot just many great shots. I am somewhat of a perfectionist, so the desire to get a great shot goes hand in hand. Persistency and patience pays off in world of photography. In the area in which I live there is an abundance of wild life. In the spring the Ospreys return to nest and in the winter the eagles congregate for some easy pickings as the salmon prepare to head up stream. There are many opportunities during this time to get a lot of great shots of birds catching fishing and bringing them back to the nest. With a some persistence and a little luck my patience is usually rewarded.

Photography wasn't something that interested me until the summer of 2003 when I was on vacation and came across several nesting snapping turtles. It was at that moment that I became interested in photography and have been taking pictures ever since. My favorite subjects are wildlife and sports, but also enjoy macro and the creative side of photography, which is most evident in some of my winter scenes. On my first photography trip to Kodiak Island, Alaska I was charged by a Kodiak Bear...my heart never beat so fast. One of the thrills of wildlife photography is that you see things most people only see on a National Geographic Special. My passion is action where ever I can find it whether it be wildlife or sports. Several years ago I had a story and photos, about a Long Tailed Weasel, published in a national magazine called, "The Conservationist." One of my goals is to work in the area of environmental photo journalism. Some pictures representing my work can be found in my gallery. The places I frequent most and have taken the bulk of my pictures are Yellowstone Park, the Oregon Coast and the mountains of Idaho and Montana.
